About

Welcome - I’m Caitlin Dodsworth, a Product and Furniture Design student at Kingston University. My work is rooted in making, with a focus on material understanding, traditional joinery, and creating outcomes that are practical, thoughtful, and built to last.

I’m drawn to how design can tell stories; through process, detail, and the names I give my pieces, which often reference my Irish heritage. I’m particularly interested in the personal and sustainable value of heirloom objects design that is made with and kept with care and consideration.

Through my studies, I am increasingly developing a strong interest in how design can support mental wellbeing and have a positive social impact. Winning The Barton Peveril's Social Structure Award 2022, was the first real acknowledgement of this interest.  In my dissertation I will explore how, often overlooked pieces of public infrastructure,  can be reimagined as more inclusive, human-centred spaces. This research encourages me to think about how everyday design decisions shape public experience. I am interested in the fields of neuroaesthetics and humanising approaches to design from Thomas Heatherwick and David Adjaye.

I’m keen to explore as many different methods and materials as possible, from working with hardwoods to experimenting with batch production, and metal fabrication. I embrace the breadth of contemporary design, and I enjoy learning new techniques, both digital and hands-on. I’m confident using a range of CAD software, and I bring additional skills in photography that help me document and communicate my work clearly.

I’m influenced by designers who bridge the practical and the poetic — including Ineke Hans, Athime de Crécy, and Thomas Heatherwick. Like them, I aim to create work that is quietly expressive, grounded in context, and made with precision and purpose.

More than anything, I want to continue learning; developing my skills, deepening my understanding, and enjoying the process of creating thoughtful, well-made design.
