About
Welcome to my website. I’m Caitlin Dodsworth, a Product and Furniture Design student at Kingston University. My focus is rooted in making; in understanding materials through process; and developing outcomes that are considered, practical, and built to last. I’m particularly drawn to traditional furniture-making techniques, especially joinery, which I see not only as a structural solution but as a way of incorporating care and integrity into a piece.
Wherever possible I want my pieces to form part of a narrative, in the way that they are influenced during the process of the design itself, but also with the names my pieces are given. These are a gentle nod to my Irish heritage. I believe that good design comes with a story and I want that to be a part of how I create my work and develop my ideas, from the birth of an piece to the eventual home that thing inhabits. Named, selected and cherished, reflecting the people that own it. Forming a circle with the maker and its new owner. With that in mind I am fascinated with the sustainability aspect of and personal connections associated with heirloom pieces.
I’m keen to explore as many different methods and materials as possible, from working with hardwoods to experimenting with batch production and metal fabrication. I embrace the breadth of contemporary design, and I enjoy learning new techniques, both digital and hands-on. I’m confident using a range of CAD software, and I bring additional skills in photography that help me document and communicate my work clearly.
I’m influenced by designers such as Ineke Hans, whose work bridges the critical and the functional; Athime de Crécy, who rethinks everyday objects with wit and clarity; Phil Proctor, whose practice demonstrates the value of material knowledge and skilled making and Thomas Heatherwick and his humanising ideas making the everyday more engaging. Like them, I aim to create work that is quietly intelligent. Pieces that respond to context, feel personal, and are made with precision and purpose.
More than anything, I want to continue learning; developing my skills, deepening my understanding, and enjoying the process of creating thoughtful, well-made design.
